Integrated Optics in the Age of AI

Artificial intelligence is changing our lives in countless ways. Let’s pull away the curtain and explore what hardware is running state of the art AI systems. More specifically, let’s take a look at how integrated optics plays an increasingly important role in enabling ever larger models and new applications. Finally, we’ll take a look at what future AI factories will look like.

Jochem Verbist

NVIDIA

Jochem received his PhD from Ghent University, where he worked on advanced silicon photonic transceivers for inter and intra data center communications. In 2018, he joined the Ghent-based startup and imec spin-off BiFAST, where he worked on high-data-rate wireline transceivers for copper and optical links. BiFAST was acquired by Mellanox in 2020, shortly before Mellanox became part of NVIDIA. At NVIDIA, Jochem was part of a three-person team leading the optical design of the company’s first in-house silicon photonic transceivers at the start of its co-packaged optics (CPO) program. He continues to drive the development of silicon-photonics-based solutions for next-generation high-bandwidth optical interconnects.
