Rob has 35 years of experience in multiple fields. He started life training as an instrument maker and manufacturing jeweller at an early age (child labour in family business!) From there, his career has taken him to many places around the world – South Africa, USA, Canada, Germany, UK and Vienna where he has designed many systems and developed patented technologies. His technical experience spans digital, analogue, mixed signal and RF electronics, EMC, radar, DSP, FPGA, software development (embedded, drivers, application level), advanced PCB layout and simulation, optics, precision instrumentation, motion control, power systems and plasma physics… this wide experience of diverse technologies is the inspiration for QPT’s IP.
GaN transistors are the future of power electronics because they can quickly transition from on to off at 1-2ns instead of 20-50ns for Si and SiC transistors. Fast switching means that less energy is lost as energy loss occurs when the transistor is neither on nor off. However, above 100 kHz there are issues with overheating and EMI. This talk explains the issues and how QPT has solved them so that GaN is unleashed to switch at up to 20 MHz for ultra-efficient switching. This will accelerate GaN’s use into new application areas worth over $360 billion.
